‘SURFING THE MAIN UNIT’
Surfing the Main Unit is a concept that was created by Medlo member Damien Wasylkiw, and pioneered by himself and his directing partner Phil Stoole on the set of the Fox blockbuster 28 Weeks Later.
Whilst shooting behind the scenes EPK material the pair hit upon the novel idea of utilising the productions locations, props, make-up, extras and cast to create a series of short films that would not only enhance the movies marketing materials, but also give them the opportunity to make fiction pieces on a previously unherelded scale.
Shooting their stories when the main production was in downtime gave Damien and Phil unprecedented access to the facilities of a large production, whilst keeping the budget on their own films to a minimum.
The result was 5 short films that captured the essence of the '28' world whilst standing alone as individual productions - and few short films can boast the epic qualities of hundreds of zombie extras, large apocalyptic locations and a ready built universe that the audience are aware of.
Damien and Phil are currently on the lookout for more opportunities to hone their highly original concept. To discuss this with them further, or to contact Medlo about our well received EPK materials please drop us a line at info@medlo.net
Stoole and Wasylkiw first joined forces on Danny Boyle's sci-fi thriller SUNSHINE where they shot and edited 30 'featurettes' used for the website and DVD bonus materials. Wasylkiw, an accomplished VJ and editor, had won an award for his short film, THE BALL.
Stoole, meanwhile, had made a short with Kenneth Branagh, the psychological thriller SCHNEIDER'S 2ND STAGE which won him several awards at international film festivals from Palm Springs to Tokyo. |
