MEDLO PROJECTS
Welcome to the Medlo Projects section.
Please select an item from the list of recent projects to find out more. |
 |
'CHATROOM'
Hideo Nakata - director of such seminal J-horror classics as Ringu and Dark Water - makes his British debut with this tale of an online community with a twisted and disturbing secret.
Medlo are currently involved with the production making behind the scenes documentaries, as well as viral marketing materials for use when the film is released in 2010. More information will follow. |
 |
MICHAEL JACKSON - 'THIS IS IT' LIVE SHOWS
We had just announced our backstage involvement with Michael Jackson's comeback shows at the O2 when the terrible news of his death broke, meaning not only had the world been robbed of one of the greatest musical acts of all time, but also our documentary charting the no-doubt dramatic process.
Dza and Phil had already filmed exclusive behind the scenes material of the press launch for O2 owners AEG, but sadly that footage will now remain the only evidence of what we had planned. |
 |
REIGNS - 'EVERYTHING BEYOND THESE WALLS HAS BEEN RAZED'
Our third animated video is another collaboration with arch comic-book creator Phlegm, and is for the dark and brooding atmosrock of Wessex's vey own Reigns.
Drawn in pen and ink and animated in Final Cut Pro and After Effects, this tells the terrible tale of captured twins and their ultimate escape from their oppressive father...

DITTO
An artists collective of writers, musicians, poets, performers, scientists and, yes, filmmakers - DITTO create and curate outstanding events of intrigue and variety.
Dza and Luke have been working closely with them, making video loops and mash-ups that are screened as part of the live events.

PRINCE - '21 NIGHTS IN LONDON'
When proto-pop-phenomenon Prince took residency at London's O2 Arena Dza and Phil were invited backstage to shoot the ground-breaking shows in all their glory.
From celebrity guests to under-stage magic, via maniacal fans and aftershow exclusives, all was captured and some of it has made it's way into a final film. We're still awaiting word on the release dates, if indeed it will ever see the light of day - but they were definitely there, and the material is definitely great.
Some of the content has now made it's way onto Prince's Lotusflow3r website, visit it here and try to find it among the mysteries. |
 |
THE BLACK SPIDERS - 'ST. PETER'
Monkey children meet unfortunate ends in this hysterically dramatic promo for the dirty rock supergroup that is the Black Spiders.
The third video in our archive trilogy was so affecting it prompted many a viewer to ask where we shot it, unaware that it is actually a 1940's safety film about road safety. Watch at your peril.

 |
DIGITONAL - '93 YEARS ON'
An interesting take on love and the infinite, this archive created music video seeks to draw parallels between the extreme optimism of a blossoming romance and the endless mystery and beauty of the cosmos.
Created using footage from 1950's medical films, as well as scientific journals of the day, the video treated to a highly secret Medlo rendeirng process before heading for online distribution.

 |
'DEATH RACE'
Paul WS Anderson's remake of the seminal guts and gory b-movie is a glorious tribute to insane stunt driving, fantastic art design and the pure satisfaction of metal crunching into Jason Statham.
Medlo were drafted in during the marketing period and were asked to deliver a mash-up trailer for online distribution, and guest editor Luke Wasylkiw did a tremendous job of turning the films cracking sound design into a pounding bassline and showing off the film in all its explosive glory. |

 |
'TRAINSPOTTING' - Ultimate Edition DVD
Dza spent many a long hour carefully and lovingly sculpting this retrospective documentary on one of the best British films ever made, featuring the honest and fascinating recollections of the entire cast and creative team.
The result was seen on the Ultimate Edition DVD and Blu-Ray released in June 2009. |

THE LOW-LOWS - 'DEAR FLIES, LOVE SPIDER'
A recent promo video for The Low-Lows
(Monotreme Records).
We used carefully edited and processed
stock footage to tell a grim and cautionary tale that
captured the mood of the track. |

65DAYSOFSTATIC - 'DROVE THROUGH GHOSTS TO GET HERE'
An animated music video for math-rock
titans 65daysofstatic.
The film was a collaboration with
Sheffield illustrator Lord Bunn, whose characters
and backdrops were added to layers of video textures
and loops.
The final piece was offered as
an exclusive download-only video single, courtesy
of Kerrang magazine. |

 |
DEATH FROM ABOVE 1979 - 'BLACK HISTORY MONTH' REMIXES
A pair of remixed videos released
alongside the music remixes.
Using only the original promo as
a basis, each piece was stripped down to raw beats
and loops, before being layered up with video and
digital interference.
Different colour schemes were used
to give each remix its own visual identity. |

65DAYSOFSTATIC TOUR VISUALS
Medlo have been the visual side of 65daysofstatic almost as long as the band has been in existence - creating and performing a full suite of original pieces to act as a live video backdrop at each gig. We have toured extensively across the UK, Europe, Russia and Japan with them.
Each video is custom-made to fit each live track, before being reassembled live as an integral part of the stage show.
You can view some of the pieces below:

65DAYSOFSTATIC - 'DON'T GO DOWN TO SORROW'
Our promo for the first video from 65dos' third album is a more serious and glossy piece, filled with beautiful lighting rather than frenzied edits.
Shot on one of the newest hi-def digital cameras in the country, the video has proved to be our most sophisticated piece yet. It has also racked up an unfeasible 420,000 hits on Daily Motion - and rising! |

PLAN B/HADOUKEN - 'NO MORE EATIN'
Another video remix project for 679 Recordings, this time for two dancefloor remixes of Plan B's acousto-rap anthem, 'No More Eatin'.
The Benning Brookes drum'n'bass dirge ekes out every frame of the original video, whilst Hadouken's electro mash-up gets the full 80s glitch treatment. |

 |
AARON STOUT - 'SPACESTATION'
Our newest animation, working with the fantastic Phlegm Comics, invites you to spend time with the loneliest man in space.
Dan Phlegm's beautiful artwork is given life and in return he adds layer upon layer of detail and pathos to the film. |
Spacestation (MOV/79Mb) |
 |
DJ PIXELJUICE - 'ORINOCCO FLOW 2008'
Made as a favour for a friend of a friend, the late DJ Pixeljuice, this was never officially released - for obvious reasons - but it has found it's home on the internet where it continues to beguile, baffle and bother all who see it. Much as it should.

THE MIRIMAR DISASTER - 'PERSIUS'
A classic Medlo piece - high concept and low, low budget!
Watch in wonder as Metal pioneers 'The Mirimar Disaster' star in an all-too interactive video for one confused fan. |
Persius (MOV/43Mb) |
 |
'SON OF RAMBOW'
Hammer and Tongs' latest is the nostalgic tale of two childhood friends brought together by the love of Stallone and his inspirational messages.
Medlo was on hand and on set throughout the production creating advanced DVD materials, pre-release web movies and a series of skits that weave dangerously close to a copyright infringement writ from MTV. |

 |
'28 WEEKS LATER'
Unrestriced access on the set of a zombie movie? A dream come true for Medlo who spent much of their time on this horror sequel knee deep in real mud and fake blood.
All this hard work resulted in a series of short web and DVD movies, as well a series of fiction pieces based in the same infected world. |

'PAULY SHORE IS DEAD ANNOTATED EDITION'
A Media Lounge AV experiment, this special annoted edition of Pauly Shore's love letter to his fans features onscreen notes and in screen clips to further explain the meta-textual level of in-jokes, cameos and references.
Obviously not an official release, this version can still be found on various torrent sites if you look hard enough. |
 |
'DEAD MAN'S SHOES'
Dave spent two days in deepest Yorkshire on the set of Shane Meadows' cult revenge thriller capturing the mood on set, the machinations of the production and the workings of the Midlands greatest director.
The footage was never used, but we're in credits so it seems like we were more involved than we actually were. Great movie, though. |

 |
'THE BUNKER'
Medlo were handed a shoebox full of DV tapes and a 2 week deadline.
The result? A 25 minute 'making of' documentary that covered all aspects of the production from funding to editing, and that Empire Magazine once called 'good'. |

 |
'PETER AND THE WOLF'
Dza and Phil were whisked off to a warehouse in Poland to document the making of this ground-breaking stop-motion version of Sergei Prokofiev's classic story.
The movie was screened on Channel 4 over Christmas 2006 and was also a recipiant of a live score from the London Philamonic Orchestra. |

 |
'CITY OF EMBER'
Medlo joined this movie in pre-production to create industry material and funding content.
It's doubtful that our work will ever see the light of day, but we were there and have the passport stamps to prove it. |
City Of Ember on IMDB » |
 |
'SPECIAL PEOPLE'
This low budget movie is a gentle comedy about the perils of filmmaking.
Shot on location and featuring a largely wheelchair bound cast, Medlo have created a short series of 'making of' documentaries to support the imminent release. |

65DAYSOFSTATIC - 'RADIO PROTECTOR'
A carbon friendly, eco-aware promo for our favourite post-rock friends.
Radio Protector charts the effects of a simple UK tour on the rest of the world, and reveals some very disturbing statistics.
The polaroids featured were attached to the limited 7" releases of the single, and the stock footage was downloaded from Archive.org |
Radio Protector (MOV/65Mb) |
 |
65DAYSOFSTATIC - 'RETREAT! RETREAT!'
33 takes in a cold warehouse resulted in this tightly edited, colour coded promo for local post-rockers 65daysofstatic.
This was our first official video for the band, following the unreleased Thrash Waltz.
The first version was lost in an enormous computer crash on the eve of the deadline and the final edit was reconstruced in an intense 2 days of no sleep and massive sugar consumption. |
Retreat! Retreat! (MOV) |
 |
DEAD DISCO - 'YOU'RE OUT'
Colourful and upbeat was the request so, in typical Medlo style, we utilised the colour bars from the original video and set about degrading the rest of the footage. |
You're Out (MP4/19Mb) |
 |
KING CREOSOTE - 'NO CLUE'
This viral release for the 679 artist is a literal interpretation of the title, as well as a quietly engaging tale of misunderstood fashion. |
No Clue (MOV/25Mb) |
 |
FEEDLE live
Electronic maestro and purveyor of breakbeat nursey rhymes, Feedle is as anachronistic as his namesake and we're very happy to be his visual suppliers on whatever journeys he cares to make. |

 |
'THE SHINING' REMIXED AND RESCORED
Following in the footsteps of the likes of DJ Food and D-Fuse's work on reimagining cinematic classics, The Media Lounge approached Andy Dobson from electronica act Digitonal to produce a rescoring project for their 4th season.
The idea was to produce a new version of Kubrick's classic tale of snowbound terror, with plot and dialogue intact, recutting the film into 6, 10-minute sequences which Dobson would rescore.
The resulting score is a mixture of the Hermannesque strings, abstract beats and bags of atmosphere which Digitonal's studio and live work have been associated with. |
 |
'NAM 2
'Nam 2 is a one hour audiovisual show mixing and blending film and archive footage of the Vietnam war.
Its aim was to question how much we really know about the war and how much is blurred by Hollywood and the media. It's also about history repeating and more importantly it's a bit of fun.
The show is performed live by a DJ and VJ, and debuted at the Big Chill Festival 2005. |

'DAYWATCH'
Dza spent a few weeks meticulously creating a series of glitched, failed and crashed stings for this epic Russian vampire sequel. They're out on there on the web somewhere, but you have to look to find them... |

 |
'HUSH'
Dave spent much of September 2007 on nightshoots in deepest Yorkshire to capture the machinations and makings of the latest film from celebrated production house Warp Films. The movie is a taught thriller set on the b-roads of Britain and Medlo have created web virals and DVD extras for it. |

65DAYSOFSTATIC - 'DANCE PARTIES'
Take one betamax tape released in 1985 and bought in Russia, subject it to magnets, knifes and dodgy toploading machines, butcher some Lord Bunn animations and finally process it through the Medlo machine and you get the new 65daysofstatic music video - the Distant and Mechanised Glow of Eastern European Dance Parties. |
Dance Parties (MP4/20Mb) |
 |
NUMBER ONE SON - 'HOURGLASS'
Medlo's first released promo made it east to Asia but never onto UK screens, this video shows the band receiving a mid-gig pep talk from their manager and was shot and cut in just two days. |
'Hourglass' (MP4/35Mb) |

BANGFACE TV
For the last 2 years we have been running the onsite TV station for the neo-rave armageddon that is the Bangface Weekenders. Holed up in a TV studio on the hottest days of the year we subject the weekend crowd to a bevy of cult movies, obscure AV work, live tomfoolery and the overwhelming presence that is/was/shall always be Normski. Mistakes are made, lessons are learnt, fun is had. |

DEDBEAT TV 2004
Our first foray into broadcasting was to the 2500 electronica and hip hop fans who attended the now seminal Dedbeat Festival 2004. Armed only with 2 VHS players, a beta SP camera and a 1970's video mixer we somehow created 72 hours of material - cult movies, drunken rants, celebrity interviews and the occasional competition within a 500 metre radius. |

'BRING ME THE HEAD OF ROB LOWE'
A cut and paste kerb-crawl around the Hollywood backlot, combining shorts, sketches, bootleg music videos and an unnatural obsession with the disgraced brat-packer.
Bring Me the Head of Rob Lowe was a feature length Media Lounge compendium commissioned by the Raindance Film Festival in 2004. It played on the final night (although we prefer to think of it as 'headlining') at the UGC multiplex on Shaftesbury Avenue - with our name in (very small) lights! |
 |
VENT 2002
Included more as a curiosity than a demonstration of ability, this short promo has just resurfaced on YouTube and it shows the very beginnings of our visual work with 65daysofstatic, Feedle and Digitonal. Vent was a night hosted by The Electonic Foundation for Sound and Vision (TEFOSAV) and it later inspired us to work on the now much celebrated Dustpunk Nights.
We've all come along was since those early days, but it's nice to see that it's still remembered. Shame about some of the visuals - but hey, we were young and thought that nuclear explosions had never been done before. |
